ST PATRICK'S THORNABY

A history of our parish

The parish was formed in 1872 and a school-chapel (now parish hall) was designed by George Goldie. This was replaced by the present church, with a seating capacity of 600 and designed by Goldie's son Edward, in June 1891. Canon Shanahan, parish priest at the time, was accompanied by Bishop Lacy (Bishop of Middlesbrough), as well as the Bishops of Liverpool and Leeds for the opening of the church.
